ROBUST SIDE DISH: PALEO APPLE COLESLAW RECIPE

By | Snacks, Veggie | Comments

Paleo Apple Coleslaw Recipe

Coleslaw, in its raw, pure state (without the additives, that is,) is one of the most nutritionally-packed side dish, compared to mashed potatoes, fries, or macaroni and cheese. But, if you make this dish swim in loads of mayonnaise, dressing, or sour cream, then its health benefits go down the drain. The payload of saturated fats, cholesterol, and sodium just cancels out all the vitamins, minerals, and fiber in the vegetables. The best bet would be to make your own and throw in some apples for more nutrients, like in this Paleo Apple Coleslaw Recipe.

Tips for Eating Out in Restaurants

By | Blog Article | Comments

It’s been mentioned before on this blog, but it can’t be reiterated enough; You are bound to come across some roadblocks when you’re eating specific to the Paleo diet; especially when you’re faced with eating out in restaurants or at friends and family who are not on the Paleo diet. However, that does not mean that you can’t enjoy yourself. After all, if you’re not enjoying yourself than you are certain to not succeed on the ancestral way of eating. Instead, use these tips specific for eating out in restaurants on the Paleo diet and you will be more than satisfied, not only with your meal, but your new lifestyle change.

Check the Menu Prior to Going

The majority of restaurants now offer their menus to be viewed online. Take a gander over the menu items so you can plan ahead of time. As mentioned previously in a blog, if a salad is going to be your only option for a specific restaurant, a snack prior to going out may be a good decision.

Choose What to be Picky About

You can always ask for modifications to your menu item, but if a particular establishment doesn’t cook in the oil that you want – Don’t panic. Let it go. Choose what you’re going to be picky about by placing more emphasis on the actual food item, and not the small stuff.

Ask About Their Gluten-Free Options

A lot of restaurants are starting to cater to specific allergies, such as a gluten one, and may offer several dishes or even a full menu that caters to non-gluten meals. Inform the waitress that you have an allergy (A little white lie doesn’t hurt), and ask about their gluten-free meals, or options. By simply avoiding things such as breads, pasta and other grains doesn’t mean that you’re avoiding gluten, as it can be hidden in things such as sauce, soups and dips.

Ask Questions

The server is there to assist you, so take advantage of this opportunity and ask about the way in which their foods are prepared for the specific dishes you’re interested in.

Extra, Extra! Read All About It

Okay, a little less reading and more requesting. Ask for extra vegetables instead of rice, pasta, potatoes or bread. Substitute when available, and when it comes to dessert, ask for a side of fruit if you want to stay strict to your Paleo diet. If not, a little treat for your sweet tooth won’t kill you. Remember, you have to enjoy yourself.

Keep The Good Ones in Mind

When you find a restaurant that caters to Paleo-friendly food items, don’t forget about it. Make this a restaurant one that you go to often so you don’t have to worry about hitting a roadblock.

Lastly, enjoy yourself. That’s what this is all about. There is no point in going out to eat with friends and family if you’re going to despise your time. Let the small things slide, and stick to what you can and know, and chow down! If you have to cheat a little bit in order to have fun, no one is judging you.

By doing so, you will feel the effects of eating real food much more thoroughly. In addition, with all the extra energy, you really don’t have any other excuse.

Join a Community
Unfortunately, everyone around you may not feel the same about their life quality, and having a lack of support can be difficult. However, simply because the people around you aren’t eating specific to the Paleo diet doesn’t mean that you have to go without any kind of support. Join a community, whether it be online or locally, and meet with people who are on the same page as you with their lifestyle and eating. This is also a fabulous way to find new recipes, ideas and of course, supportive friends.

What is the Paleo Diet, That The Atkins Diet Isn’t

By | Blog Article | Comments

You have probably heard the Paleo diet being referenced as something similar to the Atkins diet. Now this can add a lot of confusion for those Paleo indulgers, and especially for those who are looking to see whether or not this positive lifestyle change is the right one for you. In fact, the majority of the, “Oh, it’s like the Atkins diet” comments come from a lack of information, or rather, misinformation. So, let’s set you on the right path and figure out what the Paleo diet is, that the Atkins diet isn’t.

Both the Paleo diet and Atkins diet focuses on a low intake of carbohydrates. That’s about as far as the similarities go. The Atkins diet was a fad and as fast as it came into the diet scene, it left it because people discovered that it was not a healthy way to eat. There was no proof behind it, like there is with the Paleo Diet. The proof for Paleo is that our ancestors ate only the things within the dietary guidelines and they thrived on life. That’s also not to mention that it has been scientifically proven to decrease health problems, diseases and their symptoms.

During the beginning of the Atkins diet allows less than 50 grams a day of carbs which leaves next to no room for your healthy fruits and vegetables. So basically, on the Atkins diet, you’re eating a lot of met and dairy products all day, every day. This causes extreme constipation and is unhealthy as it’s not being balanced out with veggies and plant foods. As you continue on with the Atkins diet, your carb intake is allowed to be increased which does allow for more vegetables, however, there is absolutely no emphasis on the quality of foods that you’re eating. You are still eating hormone and chemical packed meats, pasteurized dairy and all sorts of preservatives and well, junk.

Then, you have the Paleo diet which does place emphasis on the quality of foods in which you are eating. Fresh fruits and vegetables, real meat products and nothing processed, hormone-induced or trans fat filled. The Paleo diet also doesn’t focus in on only eating meat and protein, like the Atkins diet does. In addition, dairy is coming ruled out. More carbohydrates are allowed because the idea of Paleo is to eat as much food as you want or until you’re satisfied. How is this possible? Well because you’re eating real foods, and there’s plenty of room for healthy, non-starch low carb vegetables.

Most importantly though, Paleo focuses on your overall health, and wasn’t brought into this modern world from the ancestral days just to help people lose weight. It is about achieving an overall goal of living, feeling and being completely and thoroughly healthy. Its must more of a healthy lifestyle change than it is a dietary one. Paleo has scientific results that support the benefits that this lifestyle change will have to your overall health, and they are most certainly all positive ones.

Of course, there really is no need for you to run out to the closet library or Barnes and Noble store to spruce up on your Paleo knowledge. After all, you have it all here on this blog. However, you may find yourself wanting to pick something up to read while you’re walking on your treadmill or sunbathing poolside (Summer is right around the corner!), or in other words, when you’re not able to access this fabulous blog. Hey! You never know! Maybe you’ll learn something new that has yet to be talked about on this blog. Unlikely, though. Jokes aside, it’s always an excellent idea to read as much as you can about the dietary change you’re pursuing. This will ensure your confidence in your decision while providing you with all the knowledge you need to thrive.
The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet is a thriving book and has a 4.5 star rating out of 5. That’s pretty good! This book focuses on losing weight while looking, feeling and thriving on a youthful age. It also places emphasis on how the Paleo diet works with deterring diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson’s, Alzheimers and a whole list of other things you certainly don’t want to welcome into your life. The author speaks highly on the scientific side of the Paleo diet, from genetics, anthropology and biochemistry. It gives you a little bit of a deeper look into the ancestral way of eating, while providing phenomenal information on why this is a simple, healthy dietary change to make.

From the same author as the prior, Mr. Robb Wolf, you can teach your children about the ways of “Eating Like a Dinosaur.” Certainly this is a captivating way to engage your children in the Paleo diet and it will also help them explain why it’s important to stick to the healthy foods that they’re containing. Since it is a children’s book, it’s a much simpler look into the caveman diet and offers information that children can break down and digest. Sorry for the pun!

Every Day Paleo teaches you why you will be thriving every day on the Paleo Diet. Hence this book’s name. It provides detailed instructions on how to live a proper Paleo lifestyle while improving your health and ultimately, the longevity of your family. The best part is that it’s realistic! In fact, the author is an extremely active moth of three and she emphasizes that eating specific to the Paleo diet isn’t only feasible for busy families such as her own, but that it’s also delicious and thoroughly life changing. It’s less scientific than the first book mentioned and provides a reasonable step-by-step look at how this dietary change can be done, and why it certainly should be.

All of these Paleo books will teach you a variety of things about the Paleo diet and how to thrive on them. Of course, you can always save the money and just stick with this blog.
